I hope I'm wrong but it appears the general consensus is Coach Paul Haynes will not be retained if he has another losing season. With Nick Holley's status still unknown, the chances of a .500 season seem slim at this point.

So if Kent State decides to replace Haynes with another coach, who should Joel Nielsen hire? Why not bring Darrell Hazell back since he is available. After all, he helped the Flashes win a MAC East title in 2012. What's that? You say Hazell can't recruit and that's why Purdue fired him. So the reality is the only reason Hazell was successful in 2012 was because he capitalized on Doug Martin's top recruiting classes. But wasn't Martin the coach that Kent State didn't want anymore and was forced to resign so that Nielsen could hire Hazell? And when Hazell could no longer rely on the talent of Martin's recruits, the fallacy of his coaching ability was revealed. And with Jeff Brohm now winning big at Purdue, Hazell more than ever appears to be the all-time worst hire of any Big Ten program.

But that's alright because Kent State now can hire him after Nielsen parts ways with Haynes. And if it isn't Hazell, it will be another assistant coach like him who promises great things for Kent State. However the problem is he won't have the talent and experience of players that Hazell had when he was hired and KSU will be looking at its first winless season since 1998. But that's the Kent State way. One step forward, two steps back.
