Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

There is something of a chicken-and-the-egg principle at work when examining the correlation between recruiting classes and collegiate success. Winning begets recruiting success, but recruiting success begets winning. Starting the cycle is the challenge new coaches face but as P.J. Fleck showed the MAC and the nation, it's a cycle that works with some perpetuity once it's begun. After finishing 1-11 in 2013 in Fleck's first year, Western Michigan went 8-5 in 2014 and 2015 before going 13-1 in 2016. Despite their 1-11 record in 2013, the Broncos captured the best recruiting classes in the MAC in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

That is the challenge for Sean Lewis. Kent State is currently last in the MAC in Rivals 2018 recruiting rankings with less than four weeks to go before National Signing Day (February 7). As much as Lewis believes in the uptempo offense, the reality is you can't have a good football team unless you have good football players. So regardless the strategy and plays you run, you have to have good players to execute them properly or the results remain the same. #FlashFast maybe the new meme for Kent State football but until Kent State starts climbing in the recruiting rankings, the Flashes will not compete with the better programs in the MAC.
