ROC Sydney will see some of the world's best drivers from the major motor sport series – including Formula 1, World Rally, Nascar, IndyCar, Le Mans, Touring Cars and X-Games – come together for a unique chance to compete head-to-head in identical cars to decide who really is the fastest of them all, the “Champion of Champions”, and to crown the “Fastest Nation” in the ROC Nations Cup.

It took the better part of two weeks to build, but it will take only 48 hours to tear up the 4500 tonnes of asphalt that has transformed Sydney's Accor Stadium into a race track. The Race of Champions will be held on Friday and Saturday night, featuring 20 of the best race drivers from Formula 1, Supercars, NASCAR and rallying. But when the engines are switched off after Saturday night's finale, organisers and stadium staff begin a race against time to have the ground ready for the first NRL game.

Part of the deal to bring the event to the southern hemisphere for the first time was the promise to re-lay the turf and return the stadium to its pristine best before the Rabbitohs take on the Panthers on March 27 - a turnaround of only 19 days.

Such a challenge is nothing organisers haven't done before. Previous ROC events have been held in Paris' Stade de France, London's Wembley and Olympic Stadiums, Beijing's Bird's Nest and the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh.

"They're giving us 72 hours, but we'll have everything out in 48 hours," ROC co-founder Fredrik Jonsson told Wide World of Sports.

"Then they'll be ready to roll out another pitch to play rugby on.

"We're responsible for dismantling the track, but after that it's the stadium who will put in the turf ... it was in pretty bad condition when we came in already."

A K-Pop show packed the stadium a fortnight ago before ROC organisers got access to the stadium last Wednesday. The final layer of asphalt was laid on Sunday morning.

Jonsson said he'd been trying to bring the event to Australia for 20 years, and came close to doing a deal for Perth and Optus Stadium.

"I was even here 12 or 13 years ago doing an inspection," he said.

The Race of Champions takes place on a 1km track situated entirely within the stadium. The drivers compete in six identical cars in a side-by-side challenge.

This year's line-up includes former F1 stars Sebastian Vettel, Valtteri Bottas and Mick Schumacher, as well as Supercars stars Will Brown, Chaz Mostert, and Brodie Kostecki.

Friday night's racing is a 'Nations Cup' format, where drivers represent their home countries, before Saturday's is a winner-takes-all individual competition.saffdgfdg
