A Clash of Heavyweights

Former UFC champion Francis Ngannou steps back into the MMA spotlight on October 19 after a brief stint in boxing. The 37-year-old fighter faces Brazilian powerhouse Renan Ferreira at the Mayadeen, vying for the newly established PFL heavyweight Superfight Championship belt in what is aptly dubbed the “Battle of the Giants.”

Ngannou is making his PFL debut after signing with the organization in May 2023, marking a significant moment for the Professional Fighters League, launched by Donn Davis in 2018. Fans haven’t seen Ngannou in the cage since his last UFC fight at UFC 270 in January 2022, where he successfully defended his heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane, winning by unanimous decision. This was his final appearance under the UFC banner, as a contract dispute led to him leaving the promotion, resulting in Dana White stripping him of his title in January 2023.

Instead of fading into obscurity, Ngannou gained global attention through high-profile boxing matches against Tyson Fury in October 2023 and Anthony Joshua in May 2024. Despite losing to Joshua in the second round, Ngannou showcased his resilience by going the distance with Fury, coming remarkably close to capturing the title from the Gypsy King.
