West Division

Offensive Player of the Week: Western Michigan QB Alex Carder
Sophomore quarterback Alex Carder (Shawnee, Kan.) completed a career-high 24-of-33 passing (72.7 percent) for 298 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-14 win over Nicholls State. Carder became the sixth Bronco QB with five passing TDs in a game in program history and the first since Oct. 8, 2005. Defensive Player of the Week: Toledo LB Dan Molls
Sophomore linebacker Dan Molls (North Royalton, Ohio) totaled a career-high 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and two interceptions in a 20-13 road win at Ohio. Sophomore punter Jay Karutz (North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia) racked up four punts for 198 yards for a 49.5 yard average against the RedHawks with three of the four inside the 20-yard line, including two that were downed inside the one-yard line. His fourth punt was a 56 yarder that went out of bounds. That 49.5 yard average is a school record, shattering the previous single-game mark of 49.0 set by Jerry Wedge versus Eastern Illinois University, Oct. 27, 1956.

SB: Schedule released

KENT, Ohio - Carrying on what has become a five-year run of excellence in the Mid-American Conference, the Kent State softball program was presented with its next obstacle when the 2011 schedule was recently unveiled. Twelve different games on the Golden Flashes’ slate will feature opponents from the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

“It will be a challenging schedule for us,” Head Coach Karen Linder said. “Our goal is for our early spring tournaments to prepare us for the MAC and put us in a position to win it.”

Regular season play will get underway Feb. 12-13 at the Phoenix Leadoff Classic, which includes two games against host Elon. The following weekend (Feb. 18-20), KSU will have its hands full at East Carolina’s Pirate Classic, taking on three NCAA Tournament opponents.

“Our tournaments are where we will identify our starting pitching rotation,” Linder said. “We’re going to be facing NCAA Tournament teams like East Carolina and Hofstra and a lot of teams that have been at the top of their conference.”

KSU will then play five games on back-to-back weekends at the Florida Atlantic Invitational (Feb. 25-27) and Marshall Invitational (March 4-6). A spring break trip to the state of Florida will include four NCAA Tournament opponents in a seven-game stretch March 18-24.

The Flashes open their home schedule March 30, hosting a doubleheader with Pittsburgh. Later that week KSU begins conference play with a trip to Bowling Green (April 1) and Toledo (April 2-3).

“We’re going to be on the road more this year,” Linder said of visiting seven MAC opponents this season. “That’s going to be another unique challenge for us, but we’ve had a lot of success on the road too.”

Another six-game week begins April 6 with a doubleheader at Robert Morris. That weekend KSU will entertain Western Michigan and Northern Illinois April 8-10.

An April 13 doubleheader at Penn State puts the Flashes on the road for 8-of-10 contests concluding with a four-game weekend at defending MAC Tournament champion Ball State (April 22) and Miami (April 23-24). Seniors will celebrate their final weekend at home April 29 - May 1, hosting MAC East rivals Akron and Ohio.

The regular season wraps up May 6-8, taking on Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. The MAC’s top eight teams will play for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament May 11-14 at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

Kent State’s fall competition begins Sept. 18-19, visiting Ashland and Akron. The Flashes then host the KSU Invitational Sept. 25-26.

Lake Catholic volleyball star commits to KSU

Lake Catholic senior outside hitter Bridget Grdina had a scholarship offer to play volleyball at Cleveland State, but she pretty much had her mind made up.

So when Kent State came with an offer, the Mentor resident gave an oral commitment . . . but not immediately.

"My parents told me to take my time and review all my options," said Grdina, who averaged 10.4 kills and 12.8 digs a match as a junior in helping lead the Cougars to a runner-up finish at last year's Division II state tournament. "But I've wanted to go to Kent for a long time.

"My sister attends school there and I'm very familiar with the area because I've been down there so often. I feel comfortable there."

Standing at 5-10, Grdina will be a defensive specialist or libero at the next level.

"I like playing back row," she said. "I don't know if I'll be a starter as a freshman, but I'm pretty confident I'm going to get some playing time."

Grdina doesn't know what she will major in.

Keith named MAC East Player of the Week

The Mid-American Conference announced its week 1 offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week.

East Division

Offensive Player of the Week: Kent State QB Spencer Keith
Sophomore quarterback Spencer Keith (Little Rock, Ark.) turned in the first three-touchdown performance of his career, going 24-for-35 for 275 yards, in a 41-10 win over Murray State. Keith found seven different targets, and has now thrown for more than 230 yards in each of the last five games dating back to last season.

Defensive Player of the Week: Bowling Green DB Keith Morgan
Junior defensive back Keith Morgan (Bellefontaine, Ohio) finished second on the team with 11 tackles and added an interception in the Falcons 30-27 road loss at Troy.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Temple K Brandon McManus
Sophomore kicker Brandon McManus (Hatfield, Pa.) made a career-high four field goals in a 31-24 win over Villanova, including the game-winning 43-yard with three seconds remaining. McManus led the Owls with 13 points and also added a career-long 53-yard field goal in the second quarter, which was the second-longest field goal in school history.

West Division

Offensive Player of the Week: Eastern Michigan RB Dwayne Priest
Senior tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.) ran for a career-best 142 yards on 26 rushes and scored two touchdowns. Priest added two five-yard touchdown scores in Eastern Michigan's 31-27 loss to Army last Saturday, Sept. 4.

Defensive Player of the Week: Central Michigan LB Nick Bellore
Senior linebacker Nick Bellore (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) totaled a team-high 11 tackles and one tackle for loss in a 33-0 win over Hampton. Bellore was part of a defense that posted a shutout, its first in an opener since 1979, and limited the Pirates to 129 net yards of offense. Bellore recorded at least 10 tackles in a game for the 20th time in his career.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Western Michigan P Ben Armer
Junior punter Ben Armer (Janesville, Wis.) registered eight punts for 327 yards (40.9 avg.) at Michigan State, including a career-matching long 62-yard punt. The punt was one of two of 50 yards or more in distance. Armer stopped the ball inside the opposition's 20-yard line three times, including a punt that hit at the 1-yard line and was downed at the two-yard line.

KSU golf ranked top 30 in the preseason poll

KENT, Ohio ? Primed for another run at the NCAA Championship, the Kent State men’s golf team will begin the 2010-11 season with some preseason accolades in tow. The Golden Flashes received 26 votes in the preseason edition of the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll ranking the program 30th in the nation.

Kent State returns everyone from a team that claimed the fifth top 20 NCAA finish in school history last year. Leading the charge is two-time All-American John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev./Hudson H.S. [Ohio]). Heading into his senior season this fall, Hahn has thus far compiled a 72.35 career scoring average, ranking him second to only Ben Curtis in the KSU record book. Last week at the U.S. Amateur, he tied for 13th in stroke play and made it to round of 16 in match-play before being knocked out by eventual champ Peter Uihlein on the 19th hole.

After capturing both the NCAA East Regional and Mid-American Conference titles last season the Golden Flashes earned the distinction of being the fourth-youngest team at the NCAA Championship. In addition, Kent State was the only school not from the Big 12 or Pac 10 to win a Regional title last year.

Along with Hahn, the Golden Flashes also welcome back 2010 MAC Player of the Year Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario/Holy Trinty). Cairns shared medalist honors at two events last season and tied for the nation’s lowest individual round with a 62 (-10) at The Traditions Course in the Aggie Invitational in April. A senior this fall, he joined Hahn during Kent State’s run to a sixth-place NCAA finish in 2008. Junior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario/Highland Secondary) is back as well after being named First Team All-MAC last year. Hughes is coming off a successful amateur circuit this summer that included a fifth place finish at the Canadian Men’s Amateur and a 10th place showing in the Porter Cup. Hahn, Cairns and Hughes were all named to the GCAA PING All-Region team last year, marking the first time that KSU had three all-region selections since current professionals Curtis (PGA Tour), Jon Mills (Nationwide Tour) and Dany Sahl (Canadian Tour) were honored in 2000.

The rest of the line-up includes reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, Kevin Miller (Dover, Ohio/Sugarcreek Garaway), who tied for fourth at the NCAA East Regional, senior J.P. Paiment (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec/Polyvalente St. Joseph), another U.S. Amateur qualifier and sophomore Isaac Charette (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), who was in the line-up for the Golden Flashes entire post season run. In addition, senior John Furlong (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and sophomore Nathan Tarter (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) are also back.

The veterans are joined by incoming freshmen Corey Conners (Listowel, Ontario), Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Augie Ward (Hinckley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit).

The 2010-11 season begins Sept. 12-13 at the Gopher Invitational hosted by Minnesota at Spring Hill Golf Club.

2010-2011 Men's Basketball Schedule

KENT, Ohio ? Golden Flash fans from across the country will have the opportunity to watch the men's basketball team this season as a pair of nationally televised games highlight the 2010-11 hoops schedule.

In addition to hosting Robert Morris on Nov. 16 at 8:00 a.m as part of ESPN's third annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, Kent State will travel to perennial Southeastern Conference power Florida on Dec. 9. The RMU game will air live on ESPN and serve as the home opener for the Golden Flashes while the showdown with the Gators marks the first ever meeting between the two schools and will be shown on ESPN2. KSU is also participating in the ESPNU BracketBusters event for the ninth consecutive season the weekend of Feb. 19. Having hosted BracketBuster games the past two years, the Golden Flashes are slated for a road game this season.

Kent State will be well tested before the early morning contest on Nov. 16 as the team begins the season with three games in three days. The Golden Flashes stay local for the World Vision Classic which runs from Nov. 12-14 at Cleveland State. KSU will square off against Bryant, CSU and Iona during the opening weekend before returning on Nov. 23 to wrap up the event against Urbana.

"We have a lot of new faces on our team this season so playing three games in three days to start off the year gives us an early opportunity to see how the make-up of our team is going to pan out," said Head Coach Geno Ford.

Celebrating 60 years of basketball in the M.A.C. Center this season, the Golden Flashes host Furman on Nov. 19 and Lehigh on Nov. 26 before Louisiana-Monroe pays a visit on Dec. 2. On Dec. 5 KSU makes only the second trip to the state Alabama in school history when the team heads to Birmingham to face UAB.

Following the Florida game on Dec. 9, Golden Flash fans will see a familiar face on the opposing sideline Dec. 12 when former coach Stan Health brings his South Florida squad to Kent. Kent State finishes off the non-league schedule as home games against Youngstown State (Dec. 21) and James Madison (Dec. 31) sandwich a tip to Morehead State on Dec. 28.

"On top of our nationally televised games we put together a highly competitive non-league schedule that includes three NCAA teams among the six that reached the post season last year," said Ford. "We played the 27th toughest non-conference schedule in the country a year ago and I expect this season to be just as challenging."

Defense of the MAC regular season crown starts in January with the Golden Flashes on the road for three of the first four conference games beginning with the short trip over to Akron on Jan. 8. The first round of divisional play also includes trips to Ohio (Jan. 15) and Buffalo (Jan. 19) with home games coming against Bowling Green (Jan. 11) and Miami (Jan. 23).

Crossover play into the MAC West consists of home contests against Toledo (Jan. 30), Central Michigan (Feb. 5) and Eastern Michigan (Feb. 9) with road games coming at Ball State (Jan. 27), Western Michigan (Feb. 2) and Northern Illinois (Feb. 12).

Kent State returns to East intradivisional play at Miami on Feb. 16 before the BracketBuster trip on Feb. 19. The final push for the MAC regular season crown has the Golden Flashes hosting Buffalo (Feb. 24) and Ohio (Feb. 26) before a trip to Bowling Green (Mar. 1). For the sixth straight year Kent State and Akron will square off in the regular season finale. KSU hosts the game which will take place on either March 4 or 5 depending on possible television opportunities.

First round play of the MAC tournament takes place on March 8 at campus sites with the quarter, semi and finals moving to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland March 10-12. Coming off a 24-10 season and their third Mid-American Conference title in five years, the Golden Flashes have four returning letterwinners and a combination of eight newcomers and eligible redshirts this winter.

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Kent State volleyball team wrapped up its first day of competition in the Spartan Classic with a split, opening the 2010 campaign by sweeping Providence College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) but then falling to UNC Greensboro, 3-1 (18-25, 17-25, 25-19, 21-25) today (Aug. 27) at Joseph Echols Hall on the Norfolk State campus.

Kent State 3, Providence College 0
Sophomore Zuzana Markova (Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic) sparked KSU's offensive attack, tallying 24 assists to go along with a career-high 10 kills. Three Golden Flashes hit double digits in digs as seniors Lauren Jones (Kentwood, Mich.) and Kristen Barr (Bowling Green, Ohio) and junior Maigan Larsen (Lancaster, Wis.) posted 17, 12 and 10, respectively, on the defensive side. Kent State kept the Providence College offense in check, limiting the Friars to an attack percentage of .071.

Providence College jumped out to an 8-4 advantage in the first set. The Flashes came out attacking following a timeout and tied things up at 14-all before Larsen gave the Flashes the lead for good with a kill. Kent State never trailed the Friars again rest of the match, wrapping up a 10-point victory in set two on a 7-3 scoring run highlighted by two kills by Markova. The opening match victory marked KSU's first win in a season lid lifter since 2007.

UNC Greensboro 3, Kent State 1
Larsen posted the team's second double-double of the day, posting a career-high 13 kills to lead the squad in addition to career-high 12 digs in KSU's loss to the Spartans. Sophomore Meredith Paskert (Brecksville, Ohio) and senior Liva Brivule (Riga, Latvia) recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Barr led the way on defense with 15 digs.

The Flashes dropped the first two sets to the Spartans but denied UNCG of the sweep thanks to a six-point victory in the third. Brivule set the tone with a kill to open the set and Barr closed it out with an ace as Kent State never relinquished the lead.

The Golden Flashes (1-1) wrap up action at the Spartan Classic Saturday (Aug. 28), taking on Navy (10 a.m.) and host Norfolk State (4 p.m.).

Pokorny named Midwest League post-season all-star

Kent State Athletics Communications

KENT, Ohio -- Former Kent State southpaw Jon Pokorny has been named to the Midwest League Postseason All-Star squad, the Minor League Baseball Class A league recently announced.

A ninth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2009 draft, Pokorny is 16 for 19 in save opportunities this season and is tied for fifth in the Midwest League in saves after moving into the closer spot in early June following stints in long relief and set up roles to begin the 2010 campaign. Pokorny, who was named to the postseason squad as a left-handed reliever, is three saves shy of tying the Wisconsin franchise record for saves in a single season.

Pokorny ranks tied for sixth on Kent State's career saves list with nine and earned three letters at KSU (2007-09). He garnered All-Mid-American Conference selection in '09, posting a 2.20 ERA with five wins, five saves and 53 strikeouts in 41.0 innings of work.

FH: Flashes picked No. 1

Kent State Athletics Communications

CLEVELAND, Ohio ? Having won the last two Mid-American Conference regular season crowns, the Kent State Field Hockey program could be well in line for a third straight title this fall. In a vote taken by the league’s head coaches the Golden Flashes were picked as the favorites for the 2010 season edging out Miami and Ohio.

As the only team in the league to return two First Team All-MAC performers, Kent State takes aim at capturing the regular season outright after posting an 8-2 conference record and sharing the crown with Ohio last year. Heading up the Golden Flashes attack is All-American and reigning MAC Player of the Year Rachel Miller (Bathurst, Australia/MacKillop College). In 2009 Miller was the only player in the league to record double-digit goals and assists a season ago. Helping her up front in the forward position is junior Debbie Bell (Hamilton, New Zealand/Waikato), whose 29 goals last year were the second most in the nation and nearly doubled that of the second-place finisher in the MAC.

Finishing second in the voting were the Miami RedHawks who return the only other First Team All-MAC player of the 11 selected in 2009. Rounding out the top three vote getters are the Ohio Bobcats. Central Michigan, Ball State and Missouri State completed the poll.

Kent State begins the season by traveling to James Madison this weekend to face William and Mary on August 28 and JMU on August 29. Conference play starts for the Golden Flashes on Sept. 25 against Ball State. The MAC Field Hockey Championship will be hosted by Central Michigan from November 4-6.

2010 MAC Field Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll
(First-place votes in parentheses)
1. Kent State (2) 31
2. Miami (2) 30
3. Ohio (2) 29
4. Central Michigan 17
5. Ball State 10
6. Missouri State 9.

SOC: Flashes open season with 2-1 loss to ISU

KENT, Ohio ? The Kent State women's soccer team (0-1-0) dropped their 2010 season opener Sunday afternoon in an exciting 2-1 contest against Illinois State. All three of the game's goals were tallied in the final 10 minutes, providing plenty of excitement after a pair of solid defensive displays by both teams.

After Illinois State scored in the 81st minute, Kent State freshman Jessacca Gironda (Akron, Ohio) made good on her collegiate debut, knocking home a ball from classmate Morgan Mah (Edmonton, Alberta) in the 87th minute. But before overtime could arrive, the Redbirds notched the game's winning goal in the 88th minute to conclude the scoring frenzy.

"They have to use that disappointment in a positive manner," said head coach Rob Marinaro of the last-moment setback. "That was an NCAA tournament team last year with a lot of experience; we'll continue to push forward."

Kent State boasted a 19-12 shots advantage, including a 13-6 lead in a wind-aided second half.

Illinois State broke the scoreless tie late in the second half. A loose ball came through near the top of the penalty box in the 81st minute, forcing Kent State goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) to make a sliding play. Sherwood won the ball, but her kick was immediately deflected by Rachel Bostick from 20 yards out into the empty frame.

"I think both teams were a little nervous to start out," said Marinaro. "There was a lot of pressure, and both teams were feeling out the pace of the game. No one wanted to make any mistakes. They capitalized on one of our mistakes."

Kent State took advantage of its preseason practice on situational play following the late goal, as the team pressed numbers forward, keeping all but Sherwood within 40 yards of the goal in the attack. Following a foul near midfield, Kent State got the equalizer in the 87th minute. After a long free kick by Kelsi Landry (Whitby, Ontario), the Golden Flashes kept the ball in the penalty box, resulting in Gironda's goal.

"We talk about the battles inside the 18-yard box, and we came through for one," said Marinaro. "The team showed character and fight to come out with a goal."

With overtime looming, Illinois State put to rest any chance for extra time when Alyssa Schulz broke through in the 88th minute, beating Sherwood to the left and knocking in a shot from 15 yards.

Sherwood finished with three saves for Kent State, while ISU's Kremenovic registered eight stops.

Kent State tried to break through multiple times early in the contest, but the offside flag kept the Golden Flashes at bay three times in the first 17 minutes. KSU was whistled for four offside infractions in the game, all in the first half.

In the 23rd minute, Illinois State had a one-touch chance when Kyla Cross beat a charging Sherwood, but her 18-yard shot skipped outside the far post.

In the second half, it looked like Kent State would get on the board when Kellyn Flanagan (Medina, Ohio) slotted a perfectly placed ball to Kelly Heaton (Mississauga, Ontario) just seven minutes into the period. With just the goalkeeper to beat, Heaton headed toward the goal, but Illinois State's Mara Kremenovic was up to the challenge and snuffed out the chance.

In the 66th minute, the smallest of margins again kept Kent State off the board. Some hard work on the left side of the field by Gironda resulted in a cross from the freshman. Josee Charron (Ottawa, Ontario) rushed in at the far post, and her leaping header was just off the mark.

Illinois State had a strong opportunity in the 70th minute when Nicole Russell was through at the top of the box, but KSU's Sherwood gathered in her attempt. Then, in the 78th minute, Kyla Cross tried to get behind the KSU defense, but a tackle by Gabi Ingram (Indianapolis, Ind.) stymied the opportunity.

Former KSU golfer Moss keeping things in perspective

Aug. 22--Rob Moss fully understood the circumstances and the competition.

That made it easier for him to find perspective about assembling two rounds well above par and being saddled with one of the worst finishes in his career.

Moss, 41, a former Kent State standout, qualified for the 92nd PGA Championship played last weekend at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wis. In one of the four majors of the year, Moss missed the cut and finished in a tie for 141st place in the field of 156 with rounds of 78 and 77 for a 36-hole score of 11-over 155.

Still, Moss cherished the time to compete against the best players in the world on such a public stage.

"It was a great experience, very rewarding," said Moss, the head professional at Pepper Pike Club in suburban Cleveland. "It was great to have a front-row seat to watch players of that caliber. And the crowds were big, very welcoming and very supportive. I just wish my peers could have had a week like I just had."

Moss, one of nine players ever to have won three or more Ohio Open championships, qualified for the tournament by finishing in a tie for 11th place in the PGA Professional National Championships in June at French Lick (Ind.) Resort. He was one of 20 club pros to advance to Whistling Straits.

He made the nine-hour drive there with his wife, their three children and good friend and caddie Andy Dorman, among others. He walked the course with a local caddie Aug. 8, and played practice rounds Aug. 9 and 10 (the latter with former Kent State All-American and 2003 British Open champion Ben Curtis).

His initial impression of Whistling Straits, with a taxing yardage of 7,514 and 1,200 bunkers, was one of amazement.

"I have never played a place like that. It's so intimidating off the tee," said Moss, a three-time All-Mid-American Conference honoree (1988-90) with the Golden Flashes of coach Herb Page. "And the bunkers are everywhere. Some were 3 feet by 3 feet and some had 15-foot faces.

"There are a lot of blind shots. You have to trust the lines you pick out. You have to do your homework in the practice rounds."

Moss also qualified for the PGA Championship in 2005 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., missing the cut with rounds of 74 and 72.

He was paired with club pros that year, but this time played both rounds with touring pros Charles Howell III and France's Gregory Bourdy.

Moss enjoyed their company and had an added bonus, because Howell's caddie is Henry Diana, an old friend and opponent of Moss when they were growing up in Cleveland.

"I have known him since we were 8 or 9. He is a great player in his own right. That was nice to have him there," Moss said. "And the two players were very supportive. It was a great experience to be paired with them."

The tournament itself became an exercise in frustration -- and not just because of the difficulty of the course.

The opening two rounds were delayed because of heavy fog off Lake Michigan. In the first round, he was scheduled to tee off at 8:50 a.m. and actually started at noon. In the second round, he was supposed to start at 2:05 p.m., but actually got going at 6:15 p.m. He only finished four holes before play was suspended and finished the final 14 holes on Aug. 14.

Moss birdied two of his first four holes in the first round but later had three double bogeys for the 78. Strong winds in the second round left him at 3 over in the four holes he finished. He played the final 14 holes in 2 over the next day for the 77.

"I putted extremely well. But the course is not set up for me. It's far too long," said Moss, who had a gallery of about 20 family members and friends. "There were three par-4s that I could not reach in 2."

Moss was on his way home during the final round when Martin Kaymer of Germany won it and American Dustin Johnson lost any chance to win when he received a 2-stroke penalty on the final hole for grounding his club in a bunker.

Johnson said he did not realize the area was considered a sand trap, because fans had been walking on it all week.

Moss, though, said players were reminded repeatedly that areas like that were considered bunkers.

"That was very clear to all the players. There were notices in the locker room and on the first and 10th tees," Moss said. "I feel terrible for Dustin Johnson, but, in fact, he grounded his club in a sandy area."

FanFest KSU gear sale

I was told at practice tonight that during Thursday's FanFest the KSU athletics department will be selling KSU football gear. Now that they've switched from New Balance to Nike there's a lot of shelf space to clear.

The sale will include game worn jerseys (laundered, of course) and other stuff.

I do know that there are NO number 9 jerseys available...sorry!

But this is a great way to gather some KSU gear for the upcoming season and for the holidays that are just around the corner. I'm a XXL in case you were wondering.
