Ball State at Kent State predictions

From Picks and Parlays:

The Ball State Cardinals have been unable to break through with a win as of recent as they have dropped 3 consecutive games, but they have a very talented offense who should be able to destroy a below-average Kent State defense. QB Drew Plitt has dismantled opposing teams defenses this season as he has thrown 20 TDs compared to 7 interceptions, but RB Caleb Huntley can gash teams as well as he has compiled 949 yards and 7 TDs. Kent State has struggled to find any consistency on the offensive side of the ball this season as they rank 89th in the country in points scored, and Ball State should be able to do enough to pull away with a road win. Final Score Prediction, Ball State Cardinals win and cover ATS 38-28.

Snatching victory from jaws of defeat

I realize Ball State quarterback, Drew Plitt is ranked only 7th in the current MAC Total Quarterback Ratings, but I still believe he is a winner despite the Cardinal's three game losing streak. In his last two games, Ball State lost to Western Michigan by 4 points and to Central Michigan by 1 point. Considering that Western Michigan and Central Michigan are currently the second and third highest ranked teams in the MAC, according to Massey, that's not too bad.

Plitt's current stats are 2,393 yards passing, with 20 TDs, and 7 interceptions. Certainly his 7 interceptions are considerably higher than Crum's 2 INTs, but other than that his stats are impressive. But what makes me believe Plitt is a winner is his performance as a sophomore at Loveland High School. In the semi-final game against Zanesville, Plitt lead the Tigers to a dramatic come-from-behind victory. With Zanesville leading 28-20 and time dwindling to 17 seconds, Plitt threw a pass for 36 yards down the right sideline for a score. For the 2 extra points needed to stay alive, Plitt faked a hand-off and headed to the right looking for open receivers. But instead of passing, he headed to the end-zone and leaped high over a defender to tie the score at 28-28. Loveland went on to win the game in two overtimes, 38-35. The Tigers then went on to defeat Cleveland Glenville, 41-23 in the snow-filled Division II state title game. So Plitt has shown he can lead his team to victory even in the snow.

Since the Flashes also have experience snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, the game against the Cardinals this Saturday should be a good one. Unfortunately, with snow showers in the forecast, I don't expect to see many fans in the stands at Dix.

Buffalo at Kent State predictions

From Picks and Parlays:

Buffalo will take advantage of the weak Kent State defense against the rush and run Jaret Patterson early and often and eventually open passing routes for Kyle Vantrease to pick apart the Golden Flashes secondary. Buffalo has covered the number in each of its last 4, while Kent State has failed to cover 4 of its last 5 following a win ATS. Final Score Prediction, Buffalo Bulls win and cover ATS 30-20.

When enablers enable

"...I actually agree with you, though, that Kent State is not going to fire Nielsen because of what we are doing. It's actually not our goal to "get" him fired. Our hope is to finally get these stories out there and end all of the cover-ups. My belief is nothing will happen, Nielsen will get a new contract after the 2020-2021 season, and Kent State Athletics will continue to slide." -- David Carducci

Just like Trump enablers deserve what they get with Trump, Nielsen enablers deserve what they get with Nielsen.

Should Kent State grant Nielsen a new contract, Kent State will not only continue to slide, but will lose all credibility when it comes to speaking about its core-values.

Where is Kent State? I thought the plan was to make Kent State men's basketball a program of "national distinction." If the majority of Kent State's athletic resources are allocated for men's basketball, shouldn't KSU have at least a mid-major top 25 program?

Failure to secure a top 25 program only validates my argument against "The Game Plan." As stated before, it should never have been to prioritize one major athletic program over another. Rather, the plan should be to secure and sustain the resources necessary to maximize the University's capacity for excellence in all its endeavors.

University at Buffalo—SUNY is a perfect example of a mid-major university maximizing excellence in both academics and athletics. Buffalo is ranked #2 in the men's mid-major top 25 poll and is currently leading the MAC East Division in football. In academics, University at Buffalo--SUNY is ranked #89 in National Universities of the U.S. News & World Report college rankings compared to Kent State's #191 ranking in national universities.

So when it comes to economics and finance, KSU needs to check its emotions at the door. Just because a certain contingent of Kent State fans want the men's basketball program to become another Butler doesn't mean that allocating more money to basketball at the expense of football is going to make it happen.

KSU would be wise to scrap "The Game Plan" and follow the Buffalo model of academic and athletic excellence. But unfortunately that will never happen because at Kent State emotions always seem to get in the way of logical reasoning.

Last win against Buffalo 10/8/16

Other than Akron, the team I hate to lose to the most is Buffalo. I guess the reason for this must be because the Bulls first MAC road win was at Kent and Buffalo's first 3-year win streak against a MAC opponent was Kent State (2005, 2006, and 2007).

My favorite win against Buffalo was the 2008 game. After clinching the MAC East the previous week, Buffalo was robbed of a 6-game winning streak as Julian Edelman led the Flashes to a 24-21 victory. Following the loss, Buffalo shocked the world the next week, defeating the #12 Ball State Cardinals in the MAC Championship Game.

Yet another moronic post...

from a Flash Fanatics poster:

"It's shocking to me what kind of shape PH left this program in and the little benefit he got from DH who benefited from some decent recruiting by Doug Martin."

Interesting statement given that Dustin Crum, a Paul Haynes recruit, appears to have replaced Woody Barrett as the starting quarterback. Barrett, considered the prize recruit of Sean Lewis' first recruiting class, may not start another game for Kent State unless Lewis gets injured. Since Crum and Barrett are both juniors, it will be interesting to see if Barrett is as gracious as Crum when he was the backup quarterback.

I personally don't have a problem with Woody and wish him the best. He has shown he can sling the ball all over the field and put up some impressive stats. But in the red zone, when everything is really tight and there's not a lot of space, can he throw the ball in a tight window when the game is on the line? Until Woody can prove that he can do that, I believe Crum is the better quarterback who can control the ball better and help the Flashes win now.

Regarding the latter part of the statement, I agree Paul Haynes got little benefit from Darrell Hazell, who benefited immensely from Doug Martin's recruiting. But I'm not going to put any blame on Hazell any more than one should put blame on Haynes for the rebuilding process that Sean Lewis is currently going through. Because to do so is denying the reality and history of Kent State football.

Developing mental toughness

KSU alum and current Alabama head coach Nick Saban defines mental toughness as follows:

"I think mental toughness is a perseverance that you have when you can make yourself do something that you really don't feel like doing. In other words, you don't really feel like getting up, but you get up. You don't feel like practicing today, but you practice. You don't feel like focusing today, but you focus. And, even in difficult circumstances and difficult surroundings, you can stay focused on what you need to stay focused on. So, it really is a mental discipline to be able to stick with in whatever circumstance you are in and continue to persevere at a high level and not let some other circumstance affect how you perform."

"But it's how you affect being a good competitor," he said. "You can't be a good competitor if you can't overcome adversity. You can't overcome adversity if you don't have mental toughness. So, it's the same as physical toughness except it's how you think, not how you physically do something."

In the same press conference that Saban was asked to define mental toughness, a question was asked for him to recall his most meaningful game when he was at Kent State and Saban singled out a game against Bowling Green.

"Bowling Green had a really good team, one of the better games we played as a team," Saban said. "We had to play at Bowling Green, and Don Nehlen was the coach there then, and they had a really good program. It was the year we won a championship, which we weren't really supposed to be all that good. We beat them up at Bowling Green, which doesn't sound like a big game relative to Alabama and Florida or Alabama and Georgia or Alabama and Auburn. But in the Mid-American Conference, that was a big game and a big win for us, and really put us in the position where we had a chance to win a championship, which we went on and did as a team."

Saban also vividly recalled the last game of his last regular season, even though he did not play because of an injury.

"We played Miami at Miami (Ohio), and Jack Lambert was the middle linebacker," Saban said of the Kent State star. "We got in kind of a seven dime and somewhat of the same goal-line defense we play now. And they had a guy named (Bob) Hitchens, who played in the NFL and was a tailback. They completed a pass down to the 1-yard line. And it was like, I don't know what the score was for sure, maybe 21-17 or something, and they needed a touchdown to win. They went four plays in a row where they wanted the lead. He tried to jump over and Lambert was a middle 'backer and he knocked him back every time. And they went for it on fourth down, and I sort of remember that game probably because that won the championship for us."

So if Kent State was not really supposed to be all that good the year the Flashes won the MAC championship, one can make the argument that KSU won it more on mental toughness than on pure talent.

But how do you develop mental toughness and can that be the determining factor in making the current team more competitive than last year's team?

Mental toughness is developed every day in practice and during weight training and conditioning throughout the year. Of course all teams practice and lift weights but the difference between average teams and championship teams is the ability to work through pain. Whether weight lifting or practicing in hot, humid conditions, you have to get to the point of pain because it doesn't do any good in developing mental toughness until you get to the point of pain. The whole idea in developing mental toughness is when you are in competition with someone else and you hit the pain barrier, you should welcome it because that means your opponent is experiencing pain and to the degree that you are better able to work right through the pain than they can enables you to defeat them.

In 1972, both Bowling Green and Miami might have been more talented than Kent State but the Flashes had more mental toughness which was the deciding factor in winning the conference championship.

The margin of defeat in Kent's six MAC setbacks last season was 10 points or less. The Golden Flashes were in position to tie or take the lead in all of those games in the fourth quarter.

"We know how close we were in a lot of games,'' senior defensive lineman Nate Terhune said at MAC Media Day last week. "This year, we have to finish."

With fall football camp beginning this week, how well the Flashes finish games this season may come down to the team's ability to work through pain during adversity. If last year's 27-24 season-ending victory over arch-rival Akron is any indication of the team's developing mental toughness, expect to see a more competitive team this year despite its last place MAC East finish in the Mid-American Conference football media poll.

Kent State at Toledo predictions

From Cappers Picks:

Toledo has dominated this Golden Flashes team recently and I believe they will win this game as well due to their rushing attack.

The Golden Flashes have a solid quarterback under center and I think he will do enough to keep this game within one score. I will take Kent State plus the points as my pick.

Prediction: Kent State 24 – Toledo 28

Miami at Kent State predictions

From Picks and Parlays:

The Redhawks are coming in after picking up a win in their last outing, but so is Kent State. That will make for an interesting MAC game here. However, the Miami team does not have an offense to speak of and that will cost the team in this game here as the Redhawks are unable to keep pace with the Kent State offense here. Final Score Prediction, Kent State Golden Flashes win and cover ATS 31-21.
