Jake Paul and Mike Tyson are about to cash enormous checks for their fight on Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fight will be streamed live on Netflix.
For as much negative press the fight has received during the buildup, this event is a calculated risk by both men–especially for the 58-year-old Tyson.

The reward is so high that while many may frown upon the concept, you’d likely be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn’t be willing to take the same risk.
Paul revealed he is making $40 million for the fight as he is serving as the promoter and talent. Tyson is reportedly taking home $20 million for his efforts.
Is anyone out there honestly looking themselves in the mirror and saying they wouldn’t fight Paul for $20 million? I’m not 58, and neither are the vast majority of people who find fault in the fight. Almost none of them look like this at any age.
Are there inherent health concerns for Tyson?
Sure, their initially scheduled fight date was July 10, but an ulcer flare-up forced Tyson out, and Paul fought and stopped Mike Perry instead. Tyson has also had bouts with depression and stated in the past that he has found peace away from boxing. All those things are factors, but Tyson has repeatedly told critics, in so many words, “I’ve got this.”
Remember that the fight will be fought with 14-ounce gloves compared to the 12-ounce gloves we usually see in professional boxing matches. Heavier boxing gloves provide more padding, thus protecting the fighters from as much damage as possible by providing more shock absorbency. The fight is also scheduled for eight two-minute rounds. Men’s boxing is normally three-minute rounds, and fights are at least ten rounds at a certain level of professional competition.
Championship fights are almost always scheduled for 12 rounds. This info means Tyson will be in the ring for 16 minutes, at the most, and when he gets hit, he’ll get hit with a more forgiving boxing glove than he faced during his heyday. In Tyson’s prime, he could regularly pull in $30 million per fight, though he wouldn’t necessarily clear that much after expenses.
While his projected payout is $10 million short of $30 million, it’s still significant. None of this suggests there is no risk, but when you consider Tyson is set to earn a payday comparable to what he earned in his prime as a boxer–and that he has had some financial problems–it gets harder to see why he wouldn’t fight Paul.
Like anyone else, I hope both men put on a great show and emerge healthy enough to enjoy what they’ve earned.
I’ll be there to watch and report the happenings during one of the most bizarre but compelling combat sports events of our lifetime.
