I'm sure by now Joel Nielsen has heard Bo Pelini's name mentioned as a possible candidate for head coach should KSU decide to part ways with Paul Haynes after this season. Pelini had a winning record at Nebraska with 67 wins and 27 losses. And after going 5-6 in 2015 at Youngstown State, he went 12-4 last year losing the FCS Championship game to James Madison University.
However, Pelini publicly defended his decision to add Ma’lik Richmond, a convicted rapist, to his Youngstown State football team. I understand that winning is more fun than losing but at what cost? Is losing your soul worth winning more games?
Once one has a true and correct conscience one must follow his conscience, regardless of the consequences. For example, last year my conscience would not allow me to vote for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump since one is evil and the other is amoral. Hence, as a conservative I chose to write in a candidate whose principles and values align with my own. Obviously, my vote was a mere symbolic one since my candidate had no chance of winning but I stayed true to my conscience.
Likewise, if Kent State University has a soul, it won't ever consider hiring a coach who allows convicted rapists to represent the school.
So no matter how many disgruntled Kent State fans want to see Pelini as the head coach, I hope Nielsen remembers it's better to lose some games than lose your soul.
