Charlotte has an identity built on an aggressive defense and offense that utilizes quarterbacks to facilitate to playmakers. It also expects to win every game, and if it can't, to improve every game, especially in the last non-conference chance.
Indiana has an identity brought from a coach who was elsewhere last year. Curt Cignetti took James Madison to the FBS level and did so with a 19-4 record over the Dukes' first two years at a new height.
Offense is how the Dukes did it, and it's been how the Hoosiers have too — 50 points per game in a 3-0 start that included a 77-3 win over Western Illinois thanks to 701 yards.
The 49ers can't strike gold trying to be someone else. If they look to beat Indiana at its game, they will fall out of theirs.
"You'd like to logically think through it and say, 'We'll do this, that, and the other thing,' but you haven't practiced any of those things," Biff Poggi said. "We've been practicing since the spring on who we are.
"Since I've been here, we've played at Florida, Maryland, North Carolina — we've played a lot of really good teams and we've been in all those games."
The Hoosiers are helped by a wave of players who came with Cignetti. It includes a pair of offensive linemen who bolstered Indiana's group after it returned just one starter from last season. Running back Ty Son Lawton also came from the Dukes to join redshirt senior quarterback Kurtis Rourke from Ohio University and leading rusher Justice Ellison from Wake Forest.
A group put together quickly through the portal has shown fast flashes.
"Our keys will be our eyes this game," Cam Burden said. "They're going to go with a lot of two by two, three by ones. We just have to go out and play like we do."
Charlotte hasn't lacked firepower when sticking to its game.
A split between three quarterbacks due to injuries has produced back-to-back 300-plus yard passing games for the first since Oct. 2020. The latest, Trexler Ivey, put together 142 on 11-of-12 passing with two touchdowns in one quarter against Gardner-Webb — he led a third touchdown drive, too, finished by Hahsaun Wilson's 39-yard run.
His completion percentage among passers with at least 12 attempts was the highest in program history.
The 49ers were stopped and relied on field goals inside North Carolina's 10-yard line twice. Touchdowns there would've likely led them to their highest-scoring output of the year, and most since an overtime loss to Memphis last season.
