Who chooses the Miss Universe grand final qualifiers?
During the prelims in the Mexican capital, the Miss Universe selection committee will choose 29 of the 30 semi-finalists who are to advance to the weekend’s main event, including four continental queens (for Latin America and the Caribbean; Europe; Africa; and Asia and Oceania). The remaining qualifier for the grand final will be decided by a fan vote.

The pageant’s organisers have revealed that there will be no evening gown competition in Thursday’s prelims; delegates will only parade in swimsuits and national costumes. In the grand final, the top 30 will then be reduced to 12, who will take to the stage in evening dress. Five finalists will then compete in a question-and-answer round, with the winner of this Q&A declared the new Miss Universe.

How can I watch the Miss Universe prelims in the US?
In the United States, the Miss Universe preliminary competition will be broadcast by the free-to-air Spanish-language network Telemundo today, November 14, from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. According to the broadcaster, viewers will be able to follow the event live on the Telemundo app, Telemundo.com/MissUniverso, Telemundo’s YouTube channel, and the broadcaster’s Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok accounts.

English-language coverage of the prelims is available on the Miss Universe Organization’s YouTube channel, but it is for members only. To access this content, you will need a ‘VIP Emerald’ or ‘VIP Diamond’ subscription to the channel, at a cost of $19.99/month and $29.99/month, respectively.

Thirteen people will make up the selection committee at the pageant’s 73rd edition. They are: music producer Emilio Estefan, influencer Lele Pons; artist Romero Britto; fashion designer Eva Cavalli; former Miss Universe Margaret Gardiner; TV presenter Jessica Carrillo; designer Michael Cinco; businessman and influencer Gianluca Vacchi; philanthropist and entrepreneur Dr. Camila Guiribitey; actress, singer and songwriter Fariana; Nova Stevens, Miss Universe Canada 2020; art collector Gary Nader; and fashionista Gabriela González.

When Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler first fought at UFC 262 in May 2021, Oliveira stopped Chandler in the second round after being badly hurt in the first. On Saturday, in the UFC 309 co-main event at Madison Square Garden, the two will run it back one more time.

Charles Oliveira is poised to defeat Michael Chandler at UFC 309. With a professional record of 34-10, Oliveira holds the record for the most submission victories in UFC history, showcasing his exceptional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prowess. In their previous encounter, Oliveira demonstrated his ability to withstand early adversity, coming back to secure a second-round knockout. This resilience, combined with his striking accuracy of 49%, allows him to effectively engage in stand-up exchanges while remaining a constant threat on the ground. Oliveira's experience against top-tier opponents, including his recent bouts against Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan, has only sharpened his skills and fight IQ.

Moreover, Oliveira's conditioning and adaptability will be crucial in this five-round rematch. While Chandler possesses significant power and wrestling ability, he has struggled in recent fights, losing three of his last four bouts against elite competition. At 38 years old, Chandler may find it challenging to maintain the pace required to outlast Oliveira. Given Oliveira's diverse skill set and ability to capitalize on mistakes, he is well-equipped to secure a decisive victory at Madison Square Garden this weekend.

Chandler's habits have not changed, ever. He always keeps his hands low and bolts in with big shots, or big feints into powerful takedowns.

The problem is that Oliveira is the most dangerous submission artist the sport has ever seen and has proven able to out-grapple the American former collegiate wrestler.

Chandler's power may be second to none in lightweight history, but his flaws are still too great. ‘Do Bronx’ can use his long Muay Thai kicking attacks to keep distance and chip away at his gas tank, plus has already proven he can both take the back of Michael and put him on his butt with a single, perfect punch.

I agree with what Jones said, that if he beat me it would do nothing for his legacy.

On the other hand, in the United States you will have to subscribe to ESPN+ to watch the main event starting at 10 pm ET (Eastern US time).

But I don’t want to fight him for his legacy, I want to fight him for the UFC title. I’m not bothered about his legacy, that’s his business.

It wasn’t meant to be this way really, with everyone asking Jon about me - it's Jon and Stipe Miocic's fight week at UFC 309.

It’s the media who keep dragging it in - asking Jon if he will fight me and he is not happy about it, evidently.

He could have easily killed it for himself. He could have killed the topic of me being the interim champion and just said "I’m focusing on Stipe this week", but he didn’t.

The main card starts at 10 p.m. ET, and Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic should make their way to the octagon around 12:30 a.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.

UFC 309 will emanate from Madison Square Garden on November 16. The early prelims start at 6 p.m. ET, while the prelims are at 8 p.m. ET. The main card starts at 10 p.m. ET, and Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic should make their way to the octagon around 12:30 a.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.

Jones (27-1, 1 NC) last fought in March 2023, beating Ciryl Gane to win the UFC heavyweight title. It was the former light heavyweight champion's last fight since 2020. Not facing Francis Ngannou for gold when he was on the roster, Jones was supposed to fight Miocic in 2023 before tearing his pec tendon in training.

Miocic (20-4) is considered the greatest heavyweight in UFC history, holding the record (four) for most title defenses. After going 2-1 against Daniel Cormier, Miocic got knocked out by Ngannou in 2021, the last time he fought.

Now 42, there have been many questions regarding the health of the MMA fighter and firefighter, his chances against Jones, and if he will retire after. A massive underdog, Miocic is blocking the noise and ready to provide the upset, regardless of what happens after.

"I think every fight, I'm always preparing for my last one," Miocic said via MMA Fighting. "I always thought about retiring after my first UFC fight. I say that all the time. Who wants to get beat up for 10 weeks, 12 weeks, come back and do it again?

"I love what I do, and it's fun. So we'll see, but right now, my task at hand is Jon. That's all I care about. That's what I'm thinking about. When I do beat him, it's going to be great. 100 percent [that would be a great exclamation point on the career]."
