Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2) has won four straight fights and competes for the second time this year. He defeated Jaime Munguia via unanimous decision this past May.

Edgar Berlanga (22-0) knocked out Padraig McCrory in the sixth round this past February in his only appearance of 2024. His previous five fights before McCrory were all decision wins.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 knockouts) defends his WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles against Berlanga (22-0, 17 knockouts).

Alvarez, at 34 years old still one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in all of boxing, has been criticized for not agreeing to a matchup with Phoenix native David Benavidez. That ultimately sent Benavidez to the light heavyweight division, and Alvarez fought and defeated Jaime Munguia on another traditional Alvarez fight weekend, Cinco de Mayo.

Canelo is on a four-fight win streak since 2022, beating Jaime Munguia in May. It took him eleven months to become the undisputed super middleweight champion. However, the future Hall of Famer will not defend the IBF title, as he will get stripped of it by fight night.

The top-ranked fighter in the WBA’s super middleweight rankings, Berlanga signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom intending to face Canelo. The 27-year-old has 17 wins via knockout, his last fight being a knockout win in February against Padraig McCrory.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) was the undisputed champion at 168 pounds before the IBF stripped him of the belt in July after Alvarez decided to face Berlanga instead of the organization's No. 1 mandatory challenger, William Scull.

The 34-year-old Alvarez has won titles in four divisions, and he's coming off a unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia in May. Since his loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 challenging for a light heavyweight title, Alvarez has won four consecutive fights, all by unanimous decisions.

"I know he's going to come to bring everything, and I will too. It's the kind of fight I enjoy a lot. I can't wait."

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), ranked at No. 5 at super middleweight by ESPN, scored first-round KO wins in his first 16 professional fights. Since then, he has scored just one KO in the past six fights, a sixth-round TKO of Padraig McCrory in February. This is the first title fight for the 27-year-old Berlanga.

"Canelo is definitely going to bring the best out of me," Berlanga said. "Every time I step up, I step up my abilities. This fight is all about intelligence. We have to make sure we match him there. It's will versus will. We're not running. We're going to stay right there and we're going to do what we do."

Mike Coppinger, ESPN Boxing Insider Sep 11, 2024, 07:16 PM ET Shakur Stevenson underwent hand surgery Wednesday to repair tears to his sagittal band and collateral ligament, forcing him to pull out of his WBC lightweight title defense against Joe Cordina on Oct. 12, it was announced.

The procedure was performed at the Surgical Center of the Rockies in Colorado Springs, where Stevenson held training camp. Stevenson, 27, was expected to resume training in six to eight weeks ahead of a planned February bout against lightweight contender William Zepeda.

The surgery was performed on Stevenson's right hand, sources told ESPN.

"I am definitely disappointed that I won't be able to fight on Oct. 12," Stevenson said. "I have been super sharp and feeling great in camp and was planning to put on a show next month against Joe Cordina.

"But I have to listen to the doctor and have these injuries fixed immediately so that I can come back stronger than ever at the start of 2025."

Stevenson's title defense was scheduled to serve as the co-feature to the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol undisputed light heavyweight championship fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) is ESPN's No. 9 pound-for-pound boxer. A champion in three divisions, Stevenson was promoted by Top Rank since his pro debut. Now, the boxer from Newark, New Jersey, will fight under the Riyadh Season banner with Matchroom.

Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs), 32, suffered his first loss his last time out, an eighth-round TKO against Anthony Cacace in May in Riyadh when he lost his 130-pound title. The Stevenson bout would have been his fifth consecutive title fight.

Mexico's Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs) will prepare for the planned Stevenson clash with a Nov. 16 fight vs. former champion Tevin Farmer in Riyadh. Zepeda is ESPN's No. 3 lightweight.

On the other hand, Edgar Berlanga, the young knockout artist from Puerto Rico, has captured the attention of boxing fans with his ferocious power. Berlanga burst onto the scene with an incredible streak of first-round knockouts, showcasing his raw ability to finish fights early. As a rising star in the super middleweight division, he seeks to prove himself against the very best.

This fight represents a clash of experience versus youth, with Canelo looking to further cement his legacy, while Berlanga aims to make a statement by dethroning the champion. Fans can expect a battle of contrasting styles, as Canelo’s polished technique will be tested against Berlanga’s explosive power. It’s a fight that could mark a turning point for both men’s careers.

While there was never a question whether Berlanga had the commercial potential to one day share the ring with Alvarez, the opportunity came much faster than anyone would have anticipated. After opening his career with a notable streak of first-round knockouts in his first 16 fights, Berlanga struggled at times in decision wins over his next five fights and parted ways mutually with original promoter Top Rank.

To Berlanga's credit, he quickly signed with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport and reunited with trainer Marc Farrait. In February, he also began a new knockout streak by stopping unbeaten Padraig McCrory in the sixth round and has shown zero signs of fear when facing off or trading barbs with Alvarez on the build to the fight.

It's going to be a big fight Saturday and it's gonna be something amazing. We're going to make history and become legends, Berlanga said. It means everything to be in this position. I'm not supposed to be here. I've been doubted since before I turned pro. But I knew that I was bound to end up in this position.

The experience gap between the two fighters simply can't be overlooked as Alvarez has nearly twice as many career knockouts as Berlanga has victories. But even though Alvarez has been installed as high as a 20-to-1 betting favorite, Berlanga has a few things going his way in this matchup, including everything from youth and a 5.5-inch height advantage to his confident swagger and a reputation as being a big puncher.

I'm a knockout artist. Every fighter wants the knockout, Berlanga said. We know that he's a legend and we can't just go swing for the fences. We have to do it the right way. Sixth-round knockout, that's what we're going for. But we're ready for all 12 rounds if we have to.

Just two years ago, it became a popular opinion to openly question whether Alvarez was slowing down with age, particularly throughout a three-fight stretch against Dmitri Bivol (Alvarez's first loss since 2013) and in decision wins over Gennadiy Golovkin (in their trilogy) and John Ryder. But the hand injury, which limited his training during that stretch, appeared to be the true culprit as Alvarez has bounced back with authoritative wins over Jermell Charlo and Munguia to help him keep pace among the pound-for-pound top 10.

I just want to show everyone that I'm still the best, Alvarez said. I still love this sport. When I stop loving it, you'll know. I love my routine and I love going to the gym every day.

To Berlanga, the fight is about even more than proving his critics wrong or establishing himself, for the first time, among the true elite in the sport.

I could be the face of Puerto Rican boxing after Saturday night, Berlanga said. I've wanted that for many years and now it's my turn to do it.

Prediction Make no mistake, Berlanga possesses both the size and power to be a problem for Alvarez, particularly should the decorated champion take him lightly or get lured into a bit of a scrap early on. But, really, those scenarios would represent the extreme, best-case scenario for Berlanga and would require of him a certain level of smarts and craft that he has yet to put together in a single fight.

Until Alvarez shows up old in a big fight, it's hard to imagine that happening. Alvarez is not only so incredibly responsible defensively, and in terms of his head movement, he also owns one of the best chins in the history of the sport and has never been knocked down, even against power punchers like Golovkin, Danny Jacobs and the much larger Bivol.

If the same Alvarez from the Munguia fight just four months ago enters the ring on Saturday, the reality of what he can do as an efficient sharpshooter and counter puncher has all the makings to be way too much for Berlanga to handle.

For everything good you can say about Berlanga as an athlete or as a puncher, he's visibly lacking the kind of poise and adaptability necessary to succeed at this level. And should he fall behind and feel the need to aggressively rally against Alvarez, all it would probably do is speed up his exit from the fight.

Alvarez admitted this week that he carried Munguia for most of their May fight and purposely chose not to finish his Mexican countryman. But given the trash talk between he and Berlanga, that's a scenario that isn't as likely to take place.

Two title fights will headline a historic event for the UFC as they head to the Sphere in Las Vegas for the first time! Watch UFC 306 Live & On-Demand with Main Event on Kayo Sports.

One of the most anticipated fight cards of the year will go down tomorrow night (Sat., Sept. 14, 2024) as UFC 306 unfolds live on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV) in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the promotion stages its first-ever event from inside The Sphere.

Leading the way will be a massive main event clash between reigning UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley and streaking contender Merab Dvalishvili. This will be O’Malley’s second-straight title defense since winning the 135-pound crown from Aljamain Sterling back in Aug. 2023. If O’Malley is able to score another impressive knockout he could solidify himself as the biggest star in the sport today. Dvalishvili on the other hand, could steal that shine by extending his own win streak to 11.

Adding to the mix will be a co-main event trilogy bout between reigning UFC women’s flyweight champion Alexa Grasso and all-time legend Valentina Shevchenko. Their first matchup back at UFC 285 saw Grasso score a massive upset submission to win the title, which ended Shevchenko’s nine-fight win streak at 125 pounds. The rematch took place almost exactly one year ago and ended in a draw, but many thought “Bullet” did enough to win her title back. The rivalry comes full circle this weekend from inside The Sphere.

On Friday night, UFC 306’s ceremonial weigh ins will go down LIVE and FREE from “Sin City” and feature all 20 fighters competing at the Noche UFC event. It will be their last time to make an impression on fight fans and get a final look at their opponent. Don’t miss a second of the action as it’s set to begin in the above video player starting at 10 p.m. ET.

The prelims, starting at 8 p.m. ET, will air on ESPN. It will also be streamed via Fubo which has a free trial right now. Irene Aldana faces Norma Dumont in a fight for bantamweight bragging rights. Mexico's Aldana owns the record for the second-most total strikes landed (1,105) in UFC women's bantamweight history. Brazil's Dumont is on a four-fight win streak. The tenth-ranked bantamweight beat former world champion Germaine de Randamie in April after a run at flyweight.

“This is good; he has finally mentioned my name, and now we are going to fight. Because I have been calling him for six years, and he has been ignoring me. It feels good that he finally wants to fight me,” said Dvalishvili in an interview.

The O’Malley vs. Dvalishvili bout has been in the works since March. In February, Dvalishvili defeated Henry Cejudo by unanimous decision at UFC 298 before O’Malley beat Marlon Vera at UFC 299 in March.

O’Malley, known for his electrifying fighting style, will seek a third consecutive title after notable victories over Aljamain Sterling and Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. O’Malley has maintained a six-fight winning streak, excluding a no-contest against Pedro Munhoz.

His challenger, Dvalishvili, boasts a remarkable 10-fight win streak and has long been at the forefront of title contention. Due to his friendship with Sterling, he refused to fight him for the belt. With Sterling moving to the featherweight division, Dvalishvili finally gets a shot at bantamweight gold.
